The Start of A Legacy

The year 1938 was busy on the national scene. Favorite racehorse Seabiscuit beat competitor War Admiral. War of the Worlds aired on the radio for the first time. The United States passed the Fair Labor Act. Of course, the local scene wasn't quiet either. Right here in Mount Vernon, an independent business by the name of Pond Tire opened its doors for the first time.

For over years, the tire and battery business has been a staple of the community as well as a solid solution for anyone who needed tires or wanted to learn more about tires. That's over seven decades of filling tires to the correct air pressure levels, offering sound battery and tire advice, and most important, providing the very best in customer service to anyone walking through the door.

The small business spirit is what's gotten Pond Tire to where it is today. Local owners Pond, Mills, and now Schiavi have all kept true to the original business foundation where customers come first. There are no price gimmicks, and while Pond Tire doesn't always have the cheapest price, it is always a fair price. As Schiavi explains "Price matters, but so do quality and service. We stand behind everything we sell."

Enduring Advice

Owner Schiavi learned the ropes from General Manager Don Clutter, whose remarkable career at Pond Tire spanned 62 years. Clutter, described as a "walking encyclopedia of rubber" also knows the business. He offered a piece of advice that has stuck with Schiavi. "Don told me every customer who walks through our door is a friend, neighbor or relative and that if I treat them right I'll do OK."

Today, Pond Tire has two locations and an inventory that is among the largest in Central Ohio. The first storefront and shop is at 103 W. Gambier St. with a 6,000 sq ft warehouse adjacent to it. The second shop is at 3900C State Route 3 North. The tire and battery business remains locally and family owned with a dedicated team of employees that includes Schiavi's daughters, Kortney and Samantha.

As tire technology continues to advance, so too does Pond Tire continue to grow and meet the evolving needs of a customer base that includes longtime residents and new faces.
